Schloss Reinhartshausenresults 1-1 of 1
Schloss Reinhartshausen (Reinhartshausen Castle) has been identified with production of rare and majestic German Rieslings since 1337. Across the centuries, this magnificent estate on the banks of the Rhine has played a central role in the Rheingau district’s reputation as a source of some of the world’s most transcendent white wines. Admired for their richness and depth, these full-bodied, opulent wines are sometimes referred to as the Kings of German Riesling. Schloss Reinhartshausen embraces 15 separate vineyard sites located in the vicinity of the townships of Erbach and Hattenheim. These include a significant portion of the legendary Grand Cru Erbacher Marcobrunn vineyard, as well as the neighboring Erbacher Schlossberg site in its 15-acre entirety. With a combined total of 203 acres planted to vine, Schloss Reinhartshausen is the largest privately owned wine estate in the Rheingau. Guardianship of the property falls to the Friends of Reinhartshausen, a small and dedicated partnership established in the late 1980s. Day-to-day management of the winery and vineyards is in the experienced hands of general manager Walter Bibo, aided by cellar master Gunter Kanning and technical director Stephan Bigus. The Schloss Reinhartsthausen estate also includes the nearby Mariannenaue Island -- the only privately held island in the Rhine. Site of a 57-acre nature preserve, Mariannenaue is also planted with vineyards, featuring a mix of Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay vines. Starting in the mid-1800s, Schloss Reinhartshausen has enjoyed a reputation as a place where art, culture, nature and hospitality meet. At this time, the estate was acquired by Marianne, a Dutch princess, upon her marriage to a German prince. After swiftly setting her spouse aside in favor of a long-term lover, the princess and her paramour went on to make their new home a leading European center of culture and the arts. This decidedly liberated woman’s numerous charitable initiatives, funding local hospitals and schools, earned her the lasting affection of the local citizenry. Fittingly, she is remembered with a wine that carries her name: Schloss Reinhartshausen’s celebrated Grand Cru single vineyard Erbacher Marcobrunn, Edition Marianne. Today Marianne’s stately home has been transformed into a luxury hotel surrounded by parkland and vineyards. Guests at the Schloss Reinhartshausen-Kempinski Hotel, 25 miles west of the German city of Frankfurt, can savor the estate’s wines at one of the hotel’s three fine restaurants, with menus ranging from rustic local fare, to contemporary gourmet cuisine. Vaulted cellars beneath the former castle form an ideal resting place for a spectacular collection of more than 6,000 bottles of rare and special vintages. Dating back to 1861, the oldest of these precious wines is an enduring souvenir from the era of the Schloss Reinhartshausen’s most celebrated resident, Princess Marianne.
