Bastianich Vespa Rosso 2011

Bastianich Vespa Rosso 750ml 2011
Sku: 17330

Vespa Rosso is our estate red which balances power and finesse through a combination of indigenous and international varieties. A wine with ripe fruit and a slightly new-world flavor profile. The lush palate makes it drinkable upon release, though it is structured enough for aging.

Tasting notes
Vespa Rosso is uncommonly fruit-forward and structured for a "cold weather" red wine, and yet it retains many of the spicy, earthy notes that characterize Friulian reds. The extra effort made in both the vineyard (sharply reducing yields) and the cellar (small batch fermentation in tonneaux) helps elevate Vespa Rosso beyond the ranks of everyday reds.

Rating
Wine Spectator 88 points - Medium-bodied and juicy, this lightly spiced Merlot offers abundant ripe black cherry fruit, as well as licorice string, orange zest and Kalamata olive hints. Fresh and balanced. Merlot, Refosco, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2020. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 2,000 cases made.-AN .June/2015 Vinous 89 points - The 2011 Vespa Rosso is a delightful Friulian red with expressive aromatics and gorgeous overall balance. Rose petal, dark red cherries, sweet tobacco, mint and spices lift from the glass in a refreshing, perfumed red to drink now and over the next few years. Gentle floral and spiced notes reappear on the finish, adding lift. .Antonio Galloni, June/2015

Wine maker notes
The Bastianich winery, founded in 1997, strives to understand the history and culture of Friuli-Venezia Giulia and take it to a new level. Restaurateur Joseph Bastianich with his mother, the renowned chef Lidia Bastianich, bought a vineyard in Buttrio, a town in the Colli Orientali DOC. The family is very precise in their winemaking, controlling yields so that each individual vine produces one bottle of wine. They employ traditional manual methods in the vineyard and create wines that express the character of the land.

Food pairing
Steaks and braised red meats.
