Querciabella Maremma Toscana Mongrana
Vinous 89 points (Aug 2013)
The 2011 Mongrana is an unusually floral, delicate wine from Querciabella’s estate vineyards in Maremma, where the wines are usually much more powerful. Dark red cherries, spices, licorice, tobacco and menthol are woven together nicely. This attractive, mid-weight red is best suited for drinking over the next few years. Best of all, it is a terrific value. The Mongrana was aged in cement and neutral oak.
Wine Spectator 89 points (Aug 31 2014)
Though lean and taut, this red stretches cherry, strawberry, earth and spice flavors from beginning to end. A bit jangly on the finish for now, but needs a year or so to settle down. Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Best from 2015 through 2022. 6,500 cases imported.-BS
Wine maker notes
The grapes are picked by hand and harvested based on their phenolic maturation, using small crates. In the cellar, they undergo fermentation in stainless steel vats. After malolactic fermentation, the wine undergoes elevage mostly in cement vats until it is blended to be bottled. A small selection of the wine is matured in barriques for ten months and then added to the final blend. Mongrana is the quintessential expression of the colors, sights and sounds of the Maremma region: fruity and intense, fresh and embracing, the wine takes its name – and its character – from that of the noble family of knights depicted by the Italian Renaissance poet Ludovico Ariosto in his epic masterpiece Orlando Furioso (“Mad Orlando”). Mongrana is bottled and packaged exclusively in the following formats: 0.750 liter [12 or 6 bottle cardboard box]; 1.5 liter [1 bottle cardboard box]. Mongrana is produced without using any animal products or byproducts. It is therefore suitable for vegans and vegetarians.
