Ponzi Vineyards Pinot Gris 2011

Ponzi Vineyards Pinot Gris 750ml 2011
Sku: 21719

Founded in 1970 by Dick and Nancy Ponzi, Ponzi vineyards is considered a pioneer in its field, setting the standard for viticultural innovation and winemaking excellence in Oregon. The Ponzi family has always maintained a philosophy of building strong, healthy vineyards through sustainable agricultural practices. All 120 acres of the Ponzi owned and managed vineyards - Estate, Abetina, Madrona, Aurora and Avellana - are LIVE Certified Sustainable. In 1988, Robert Parker named Dick Ponzi as one of the finest winemakers in the world; only three other Americans were so recognized. In 1994 Dick handed over winemaking duties to his daughter Luisa, though the two still work closely together. Luisa apprenticed with Christophe Roumier of Domaine Roumier in Burgundy as well as with Luca Currado of Vietti in Piedmont. Ponzi Vineyards consistently achieves excellence in the creation of its wines. No expense is spared, no experiment untried. “There is a reputation behind our label that I want people to know they can count on. ~ Winemaker Luisa Ponzi

The Ponzi 2011 Pinot Gris reflects not only the increasing age of the estates oldest vines of this variety, but also the diversity of expositions, soils, and locations, now that two sites beside the original vineyard are planted with it. Estate fruit is supplemented with contract grapes sourced from as far away as Zenith in the Eola Hills. Tank vinification; near-absence of malo-lactic conversion; a soupcon of Muscat Ottonel and Gewurztraminer; and (abstracting from recent experiments with spontaneous fermentation) reliance on a single selected yeast strain remain constants. Fresh apple, quince, lime and grapefruit lusciously refresh the palate, while honeysuckle and orange blossom waft throughout. There is some textural tenderness here as well as buffering of the green apple acidity that one too seldom encounters in Willamette Pinot Gris and a satisfyingly juicy and persistent finish. Enjoy this over the next 18-24 months.
