The Chocolate Block Red
Wine Spectator 88 points (Jun 15 2015)
An old-school style, with signed alder, coffee and sweet earth notes peeking out from the core of steeped plum and black currant fruit. The slightly rugged finish lets loam and tobacco hints squeeze through. Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Cinsault and Viognier. Drink now through 2016. 6,800 cases imported.-JM
Vinous 90 points (Jun 2015)
(the production of this wine was down in 2013; only the Cabernet was aged in new oak): Deep ruby-red. Liqueur-like chocolatey grenache dominates the nose today, but fresher notes of cherry and violet emerge with air. A lovely spicy, southern-style wine with medium weight and nicely integrated acidity (3.8 pH); really nothing overripe about this wine. Finishes juicy and firmly tannic, spreading out to saturate the palate without leaving any impression of excess weight.
Wine maker notes
The quest to understand the name of this wine and the wine itself is now the stuff of legend - it’s even launched a graphic novel (see here). While we are not about to reveal all, we can say that the style of the wine is a reflection of our belief that the Cape, with its Mediterranean climate, is eminently suited to blended reds. The make-up of this wine is tweaked from vintage to vintage to best reflect the season and the ancient vines of great character that are an integral part of the wine’s charm and personality.
