Joseph Drouhin Montrachet Marquis de Laguiche 2007

Joseph Drouhin Montrachet Marquis de Laguiche 750ml 2007
Sku: 1532842*

This world-famous estate belongs to one of the oldest and most aristocratic French families : the Marquis de Laguiche. Out of the 14 different owners, the Marquis de Laguiche family is propriétaire of the largest portion of Le Montrachet, entirely located in Puligny (according to many authorities, the better side). It has been in their hands since 1363. It is ironical that the hillside of Montrachet, producing Burgundy`s most prestigious white wine (and in some say the world`s most complex), should look so unprepossessing. The etymology of the place-name is actually instructive : the word rachet refers to a poor type of soil where only scrawny bushes can grow. It is therefore on this "poor, hard, infertile" soil, which geologists call Bathonian limestone, that the Chardonnay grape develops this unique "terroir" character.

Tasting notes
Nose rather excessive of flowers, of hot croissant andpreserved lemon, evolving to the ageing towards nuances of roasted hazelnuts and of spice. The long finish leaves the palate with flavors of bread of spices.

Wine Advocate 95 points (Dec 2009)
The 2007 Montrachet Marquies de Laguiche exudes decadent lily and musk oil aromas; practically detonates on the palate with ripe peach and a puff of brown spices and smoke; offers a seductively creamy and expansive amalgam of nut oils, honey, and pasted orchard fruits; and reverberates in a finish with tactile chalk dust, fruit skin, brown spice and citrus zest impingement. Here is a marvelous example of concentration allied to elegance and - in keeping with its vintage in general and especially chez Drouhin - an unusually forward and youthfully seductive exemplar of its appellation, but one I certainly anticipate will gain in complexity in coming years and to be worth following for a dozen or more.

Technical notes
Site : in the southern part of the Cote de Beaune, the estate of the Marquis de Laguiche is entirely located on the Puligny side of the appellation. A very mild slope and a great south-east exposure. History & tradition: at every period of history, a few vineyards have been considered heirloom treasures for their incomparable quality. The Montrachet of Marquis de Laguiche belongs to this Pantheon. This property (2.06 hectares - 5.15 acres) is actually the largest parcel of the Montrachet vineyard and has been in the hands of the Laguiche family since 1363. The Drouhin family is in charge of its cultivation and vinification and, since 1947, has spread and preserved its worldwide renown. Soil: brown-red earth, strewn with white, polished limestone pebble. The word ”rachet” in Montrachet means infertile land, where nothing can grow.

Food pairing
The wine in bottles blossoms with 4 to 6 years of age. It can be served with shellfish, fishes in sauce, fatty livers, white meats. A great aperitif.
