Michele Chiarlo Barolo Tortoniano
Colour: garnet red with bright reflections Aroma:engaging, ethereal and complex, hints of withered roses, juniper and delicate spices Taste: ample, harmonious and aristocratic
Wine Advocate 91 points (Jun 2013)
The Chiarlo family achieved nice results with its 2009 Barolo Tortoniano. True to the varietal, it shows tar, licorice, black fruit and brimstone that shape a light and elegant feel. It takes its time to warm in the glass, slowly growing in intensity as it does. A medium build and bright berry end-notes complete a pretty picture of Barolo. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2022.
Wine maker notes
Barolo is indeed one of the world’s greatest wines, rich in history and appreciated everywhere. The production area is limited to 11 communes led by Barolo, where Michele Chiarlo owns historical vineyards. ”Tortoniano” Barolo takes its name from theTortonian geological area (La Morra and Barolo), since a part of the grapes used to produce it come from Cerequio crus and a part from surrounding vineyards. Tortonian soil is characterised by sedimentary clayey marl known as SaintAgatha, interspersed with bluish-grey sandstone, which gives rise to a Barolo of exceptional elegance and endowed with marked and complex fragrances as well as a rich taste, with delicate, highly pleasing tannins.
CONSUMPTION PERIOD: a good vintage will reach its peak after 3-4 years, it ages well for up to 15 -18 years; in exceptional vintages it can age up to 20 years SERVING TEMPERATURE: 17°-18°C ACCOMPANIMENTS: red meat and game
