de Martino Carmenere Single Vineyard Alto de Piedras 2011

de Martino Carmenere Single Vineyard Alto de Piedras 750ml 2011
Sku: 1877463*

Tasting notes
On the nose, there are generous aromas of fresh redfruits and spices, with herbaceous undertones. There is great concentration of fruit as well as ripe, well-integrated tannins on the palate. The finish is long and elegant. This wine possesses great aging potential.

The 2011 Single Vineyard Carmenere Alto de Piedras Carmenere is sourced from the 5.5 hectare organic vineyard in Isla de Maipo, an alluvial terrace of the Maipo River with granitic soil that also produced the fruit for their first Carmenere back in the 1990s. (At the time, this was the first varietal in Chile labeled Carmenere.) The wine was aged in 5,000-liter oak foudres for two years before bottling. This grape has low acidity and natural herbal aromas, so if you harvest very late you get 15% alcohol and no pyrazines, but also a pH of 4 and two grams of acidity. What you have to do is to work the vineyard: it cannot be in cool areas, you need a warm place for Carmenere, controlling yields, with limited watering between flowering and veraison. Working this way, they get a wine with 12.8% alcohol and a pH of 3.5 It has a bright color and an intense aroma of paprika, smoked meat, ripe red cherries with dusty, fine-grained tannins, supple, with flavors of tobacco and spices, balanced acidity and good length. This is a superb example of ripe Carmenere, avoiding all the green aromas but keeping the acidity. I wish more Carmeneres were like this! Drink now-2018.

Food pairing
A great wine with lamb, duck, and game. It is also perfectly suited for entrees with full-flavored, spicy sauces.
